How Do You Report an AI-Generated Crypto Scam?
Where to report an AI-generated crypto scam, from platforms and impersonated companies to scam databases and law enforcement, and what to include.
Reporting an AI-generated scam works much like reporting any other crypto fraud, with a few extra steps worth taking because deepfakes and fake accounts can spread quickly. Here's where to report and what to include.
Report It Where You Found It
If the scam appeared as a video, ad, social media post, or account, report it directly to the platform using its impersonation, fraud, or deepfake reporting option. Platforms can remove content and accounts quickly, which limits how many other people see it.
Report It to the Person or Company Being Impersonated
If a deepfake or fake account impersonates a real person, exchange, or project, let them know through their official channels. Many companies have dedicated abuse or security contacts, and impersonated individuals often issue public warnings that help others. Checking their official channels also confirms whether the content is fake in the first place.
Report Scam Addresses to Community Databases
Wallet addresses and domains used in a scam can be submitted to public crypto scam reporting databases, such as Chainabuse. Scam databases help warn others who check those addresses before sending funds.
Report It to Law Enforcement
If you lost money or were targeted, file a report with your national cybercrime or fraud reporting service, such as the FBI's IC3 in the United States, or your local police in other countries. Even when recovery is unlikely, reports help authorities connect cases and identify larger operations.
Contact Any Exchange Involved
If funds were sent from or to an exchange, contact that exchange's official support immediately with the transaction details. Exchanges can sometimes freeze funds that reach accounts on their platform.
What to Include in Your Report
The link to the content or account, screenshots, the wallet addresses involved, transaction hashes, dates and times, and any messages exchanged. Save copies before the content is taken down, since fake accounts and videos often disappear quickly.
Why You Should Report Only Through Verified Channels
Scammers often target victims a second time with fake "recovery" or "reporting" services. Recovery scams promise to retrieve lost funds for an upfront fee. Report only through official platforms and authorities you find yourself, and never pay anyone who contacts you offering to recover your crypto.
If You Already Sent Funds
Act quickly and follow the steps in what to do after sending funds to a risky address: contact the exchange, report the addresses, and document everything.
Check and report suspicious addresses before and after an incident. Every report makes the next victim a little less likely.
